Artist with Maine ties honored at White House

Painter and printmaker Will Barnet received one of the country’s highest honors Monday, when President Obama presented him with a National Medal of Arts.

Barnet, 100, has deep Maine ties. Much of the inspiration for his artistic vision derives from his time in Maine, particularly in and around the midcoast area of Phippsburg.

Barnet, who lives in New York most of the year, received his medal in an East Room ceremony at the White House.

The White House cited Barnet “for his contributions as an American painter, printmaker and teacher. His nuanced and graceful depictions of family and personal scenes, for which he is best known, are meticulously constructed of flat planes that reveal a lifelong exploration of abstraction, expressionism and geometry. For more than 80 years, Mr. Barnet has been a constant force in the visual arts world, marrying sophistication and emotion with beauty and form.”

Among others who received honors Monday were Al Pacino, Mel Tillis and Andre Watts.

In remarks prior to conferring the medals, Obama praised artists for their contributions to society, and characterized those honored as  “icons” for their courage to “dwell in possibilities.”

“As much as we need engineers and scientists,” the president said, “we also need artists and scholars ... to disrupt our views and challenge our assumptions.”

Susan Danly, senior curator at the Portland Museum of Art, said the museum has 13 Barnet images in its collection, though none is currently on view.

“We are very proud of him,” Danly said. “This is a top honor bestowed on an artist in the country, and certainly Will Barnet is one of the pre-eminent painters in Maine today. He has a long-standing love of New England and of Maine.”

In an interview with the Maine Sunday Telegram in 2002, Barnet said that painting has been a way of life for as long as he could remember.

“It’s just a pattern of living that has been a part of me that began very early,” he said. “I had a studio in my father’s basement when I was 12 years old. By the time I was 14, I read every book on the history of art that was available. Today ... it’s a continuation of my whole life, of my whole being. It is something that is a natural pattern that flows every day. It’s just a part of me. Every day, I have ideas, thoughts or feelings that I like to express.”

He was born in Beverly, Mass., in May 1911 and first came to Maine in 1953.

He has received many awards in his life, including the first Artist’s Lifetime Achievement Award Medal given on the National Academy of Design’s 175th anniversary; the College Art Association’s Lifetime Achievement Award; the Philadelphia Academy of Fine Art’s Lippincott  Prize; and the American Academy and Institute of Arts and Letters’  Childe Hassam Prize.

His paintings and prints are included in most major public collection in the United States, including the National Gallery of Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Museum of Modern Art, New York; the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; the  Philadelphia Museum of Art and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art.

Art and soul

JOHN Hatton came to Goulburn yesterday on a mission. Equipped with a large oil painting he’d poured his heart into, he and wife Vera drove straight to John Edlund’s home.

The former independent MP for the South Coast wanted to express his appreciation to the man, who like himself had fought police corruption and been victimised for having the courage.

“The reason I want to give this to John is my extreme admiration for him,” he told the Post.

“I want to leave for him and his family an expression of gratitude for what he’s done for the people of NSW. It’s my way of recognising him.”

The landscape work doesn’t depict any particular rural scene, but one in Mr Hatton’s head. The sweeping hills represent the countryside in which the MP and Mr Edlund regularly seek solace, healing and perspective. Granite rocks in the foreground symbolise integrity.

Mr Hatton has a wealth of respect for Mr Edlund. Together they worked to expose police corruption in the 1980s and 1990s, leading to the Wood Royal Commission.

Former Detective Sergeant Edlund was medically discharged from the NSW Police Academy in December 1998 suffering severe stress. He says he was the victim of a string of trumped up charges and allegations after airing his concerns about corruption in senior NSW police ranks, uncovered in Operation Seville, a drug operation involving mafia.

NSW Police Commissioner Andrew Scipione has only this year apologised for Mr Edlund’s treatment.

“It’s not an anger that boils but I feel outrage when people are treated badly by the very organisation they’re serving, and which should be looking after them,” Mr Hatton said.

Mr Hatton has been interested in painting since 1970 but took it up seriously 16 years ago. Mr Edlund is a painter too, with a penchant for landscapes, kookaburras and horses. Only when he moved to Goulburn did he find the time for art classes.

Cancer in his lung and shoulder has since restricted his movement. The disease has already cost him an eye and the stress of fighting his case hasn’t helped, he says. He was overwhelmed by Mr Hatton’s gesture.

“It’s one of the few moments in my life that someone has done something for me in gratitude for what I did as a police officer,” he told the Post.

“My experience with John Hatton is that from the first moment I looked for help, he was there.” Mr Edlund said it had been a long journey and thanked Mr Hatton and former Detective Sergeant Matt Casey for their enduring support. The painting has taken pride of place in his lounge room.

Solar energy market opens new opportunities for cooling solutions, says NS Micro Motor

The surging oil price has drawn much attention to the development of renewable energies, in particular, solar energy. According to Solarbuzz, worldwide solar photovoltaic (PV) market installations reached a record high of 18.2GW in 2010, representing a 139% growth on year. Growth will continue in 2011 when the market of related manufacturing equipment is expected to climb 41% from a year earlier to US$15.2 billion, said the market research firm.

TrendForce's statistics also suggests that the global solar cell production capacity is estimated at 20-25GW in 2011, and demand will continue to grow at 20-25% per year.

Digitimes recently had a chance to talk to Leon Wang, senior supervisor of Marketing Center for NS Micro Motor Technology, to discuss how the rising demand for solar energy worldwide could generate new growth opportunities for his company. Specializing in the manufacture of computer fans and blowers, NS Micro Motor has expanded its product lineup specifically designed for use in PV inverters and uninterrupted power systems (UPS), and has grown its client portfolio to include Motech Industries and other major solar cell companies.

The following is an excerpt of the conversation.

Cooling solutions for solar applications

NS Micro Motor has a complete portfolio of fan modules targeted at solar inverters and UPS. Similar to cooling solutions used for other different applications, those designed specifically for parts and components used in solar-powered devices require a certain degree of performance and stability. But the latter segment should also meet some special requirements such as the ability to resist weather of all kinds.

As solar power systems must be installed outdoors to receive direct sunlight, parts and components used to build the installations will require a higher level of weather resistance than those used for other applications. Different countries around the world have varying climate and weather conditions. For instance, weather patterns in Europe and the Middle East are very different.

Furthermore, in many countries, the difference between day and night time temperatures could be huge. For example, the desert regions of the Middle East have wide diurnal temperature ranges. Average temperatures are around 40 degrees Celsius during the day, but fall to minus 10 degrees Celsius at night time. Accordingly, components and parts used in solar installations may even comply with stringent military level specifications for temperature and humidity, waterproofing and dust resistance.

In addition, PV system parts and components have to be certified in accordance with different standards for electrical equipment around the world. Products exported to the US must meet the IP laboratory standards while those to Europe are required to be VDE-approved. NS Micro Motor's cooling modules for solar applications all conform to both standards, joining Japan's Sanyo Electric, and Taiwan-based Sunonwealth Electric Machine Industry and Delta Electronics.

Sharp Solar Panels Power Array At Washington DC Sheridan School

The Sheridan School in Washington, D.C., recently flipped the switch on a 3,800

square foot roof-mounted solar power array. This solar installation, comprised of 252

224 watt panels from Sharp Solar, is one of the largest in the District, and it will

provide 56 kilowatts of energy. Working with Rockville, Maryland-based Clean Currents

Solar, Sheridan was able to tap Washington, DC's $2 million-a-year Renewable Energy

Incentive Program (REIP) to help fund the project. The school is expecting a complete

payback of their investment in the solar array within ten years. Sheridan students

are particularly excited by plans to install a digital readout in the lobby of the

school and on the school's Web site that will allow real-time monitoring of the

output from each of the 252 solar panels. This capability is made possible by the

separate micro inverters installed on each of the 15-square-foot panels, a first for

a commercial-scale system in the area.


"Sharp is delighted to be a part of this project that will educate the Sheridan

School's students about renewable energy while simultaneously reducing the school's

carbon footprint," said Eric Hafter, senior vice president of Sharp Solar Energy

Solutions Group. "This project highlights what can be accomplished taking advantage

of the public programs that support the solar industry.  In this case, the Renewable

Energy Incentive Program helps to drive home the importance of renewable energy

sources to students and in turn helps build a greener future.  It's a win for the

students, for the school, for the nation's capital and for the future of our planet,"

he said.

"I'd be hard pressed to think of a better way to teach kids about both sound

environmental stewardship and smart economics than by lighting their learning

experience with solar power," said Lee Keshishian, president of Clean Currents Solar.

"This project, made possible by the partnership of The Sheridan School, Clean

Currents Solar, and the DC government's Renewable Energy Incentive Program, is a

great example of the long-term benefits of solar power to the community and the

environment."


"This project reflects the Sheridan School's long-term commitment to environmental

responsibility and sound economic planning," said Mike Stoll, director of finance and

operations at Sheridan. "At Sheridan, we see value in teaching our students to be

wise caretakers of the planet and responsible members of the community. For us, solar

power was not only the most environmentally responsible option and the best decision

for our students, it also made good economic sense."
